  • 315 MILE WALK

    KAILAHUN - FREETOWN

    The first-ever Walk For A Child event began on January 6th of 2021, walking 315 miles from the eastern village of Kailahun to the capital city of Freetown, Sierra Leone.

    The walk was inspired by the outrage sparked by the murder of Kadijah Saccoh, a 5-year-old girl from Sierra Leone, who was raped and strangled to death by a family member.

    The walk was completed in 21 days by two men, Chief Hindolo Pokawa and Dustyn Montgomery.

    Expedition Highlights:

    • 315 Miles walked on foot in 21 days

    • 20 communities visited with ceremonies held

  • 540 MILE WALK

    JENDEMA (LIBERIAN BORDER) - FREETOWN

    The second-ever Walk For A Child event began on November 1st of 2021, walking 540 miles around the perimeter of Sierra Leone. The walk started in the border town of Jendema, Sierra Leone, and finished in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

    After the success of the first expedition. local community leaders began reaching out to Mr. Pokawa, sharing stories of sexual violence prevalent in their communities and asking that the program visit their community on the next walk.

    The walk was completed in 36 days by Chief Hindolo Pokawa, Dustyn Montgomery, and 5 in-country participants who joined free of cost.

    Expedition Highlights:

    • 540 Miles walked on foot in 36 days

    • 34 communities visited with ceremonies held

    • 5 in-country participants who joined and completed the expedition free of cost

  • 180 MILE WALK

    MONROVIA, LIBERIA - BO, SIERRA LEONE

    The third-ever Walk For A Child event began on February 7th of 2024, walking 180 miles from Monrovia, Liberia to Bo, Sierra Leone.

    In its third expedition, Walk For A Child expanded into a new country and new community. Working with the founder of Four Hunger, an organization building water wells in the community of West Point in Monrovia, Liberia, this expedition aimed to understand the impact that clean drinking water has on the development of women and children.

    Walk For A Child in partnership with Four Hunger raised funds to build the 23rd water well in the community of West Point, Monrovia. The water well now provides clean drinking water to the women, children, and men of that community.

    The walk was completed in 8 days by Chief Hindolo Pokawa, Dustyn Montgomery, the first out-of-country participant, Matthew Sweetman, as well as 30 in-country participants who joined free of cost

    Expedition Highlights:

    • 180 Miles walked on foot in 8 days

    • 9 communities visited with ceremonies held

    • 30 in-country participants who joined and completed the expedition free of cost

    • The first out-of-country participant joined the expedition, traveling from the state of Minnesota, USA

  • 100 Mile Walk

    Kenema - Yenga Border

    The fourth-ever Walk For A Child event will kickoff in January of 2027, walking 100 miles from the city of Kenema, Sierra Leone finishing in the community along the Yenga Border.

    The fourth expedition aims to understand the impacts that border conflicts have on the development of women and children, as well as the ways in which these conflicts influence and increase sexual violence in the nearby communities.
